Competition Prep on a Budget

Competing in Fit Model Bikini Figure Wellness Fitness WPD WBB bodybuilding shows can be quite the investment. For many the financial investment is often a motivator on whether or not it's the right time to compete. You'll certainly need to budget and save to prepare for your show (s)! The reality is you'll have to dish out a few coins to win the trophy! We've compiled a list of the things you can expect to pay for, along with ways to save!

Fitness Training $50+ per session

Working with a certified fitness coach can make a big difference in your prep, especially when it comes to fine-tuning your nutrition, tracking progress, and continuously adjusting your workouts to meet your goals. While training sessions typically start at $50 or more per session, many coaches offer package deals or full prep programs that can significantly reduce the cost over time.

To get the most value, consider purchasing a bundle of sessions or enrolling in a competition prep package that covers the duration of your prep. When you're with your coach, use that time to tackle your most challenging areas—like proper form, heavy lifts, or posing. Save on costs and make use of your own time by handling activities like cardio, stretching, or ab work on your own. Strategic use of coaching ensures you're getting expert support without overextending your budget.

Posing Coach $40+ per session

You can have the best physique on stage—but if your posing isn’t on point, you won’t get the recognition you deserve. Posing is a critical part of competition prep, and mastering it takes time, consistency, and coaching. Most posing coaches charge around $40 or more per session, depending on their experience and whether sessions are virtual or in-person.

To save money, consider starting with a few focused sessions early in your prep to learn the fundamentals, then practice regularly on your own. As show day approaches, schedule a few follow-ups to fine-tune your presentation and transitions. Group posing classes can also be a more affordable option and give you the added benefit of learning from others.

Meal Prep $250+ month

Preparing for a show means a lot of meal prep—and usually eating the same core foods week after week. That consistency gives you a great opportunity to save money. Buy your staple items in bulk and consider store memberships at places like Costco or BJ’s. Stock up on proteins, carbs, and produce, then freeze or store what you won’t use right away to cut down on frequent grocery runs.

If you have a training partner or a fellow competitor who enjoys the same foods, split bulk purchases to stretch your dollars even further. Meal prep doesn’t just fuel your body—it can also save you serious cash with a little planning.

Supplements $50+ month

Supplements are completely optional but, many competitors use them to support energy, recovery, and overall wellness. Common supplements include a daily multivitamin, omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics, and CLA (conjugated linoleic acid). If you're also using protein powder, keep in mind that a single tub can cost anywhere from $40–$60+, and depending on how often you use it, it might not even last a full month.

To cut costs, consider buying in bulk and timing your purchases around sales. Many supplement retailers offer discounts on larger orders, and some have loyalty or rewards programs that give you points, coupons, or even free products based on how much you spend. Use those perks strategically to restock your essentials. You can also save by choosing generic or store-brand versions of basic supplements like multivitamins.

Competition & Card Fees $200+

Every competition requires an entry fee, and the cost can vary depending on the size and prestige of the show. In addition, most federations (such as NPC, IFBB, etc.) require an annual membership fee to be eligible to compete—this fee must be renewed each year and is non-negotiable.

To keep costs in check, be selective when choosing your shows. Give yourself plenty of time to prep and consider the total expense—including travel and lodging, which can add several hundred dollars to your budget.

Start with local shows whenever possible. Competing close to home eliminates many travel-related expenses and can significantly reduce your overall cost. When you're ready to step into larger shows or national circuits, look for host hotel discounts or event rate deals—and book early to lock in the best price.

Hair & Makeup - $200+

Hair and makeup costs can vary widely depending on the show and the artist. While professional glam services aren’t mandatory, they can make a big impact—especially under stage lights and in professional photos. A flawless look helps showcase your hard work and confidence on stage.

Many show promoters partner with hair and makeup artists who offer special event pricing, so be sure to check early and book ahead—slots fill quickly! Always choose a reputable artist with a track record of reliable service. The last thing you want is a no-show on competition day.

If professional services are out of budget, consider going the DIY route. Run multiple test trials before show day to perfect your look. You can also visit a makeup counter—most offer complimentary applications with a product purchase—which is a great way to try different styles and get professional tips without breaking the bank.

Competition Suit- $200+ -

Your suit is the centerpiece of your stage look—and while it should make a statement, it doesn’t have to break the bank. Ready-made suits typically start around $200+, depending on the seller. Keep in mind that these off-the-rack options aren’t custom-fit, so you may need to invest in alterations as your physique changes closer to show day.

The amount of bling also plays a big role in the final price. The more crystals, the higher the cost—so if you're trying to stay within budget, consider a simpler design with strategic sparkle.

Already have a suit? Perfect. Repurposing it can save you hundreds. Try updating it by adding more rhinestones, changing the connectors, or adjusting the fit to match your current shape. With a few tweaks, your old suit can feel brand new again—without the full price tag.

Heels $50+

While physique and bodybuilding divisions skip the heels, competitors in Fit Model, Bikini, Figure, Wellness, and Fitness will need a solid pair of stage heels to complete their look and perfect their posing. A good pair can range in price depending on the style, quality, and sparkle. If funds are tight, consider borrowing or sharing with a friend—just make sure they’re the right size and still in good condition.

Jewelry $75+

Stage jewelry adds the finishing touch to your competition look—but you don’t have to overspend to shine. Earrings, bracelets, and rings should enhance your physique, not overpower it. A well-coordinated jewelry set can elevate your presentation without stealing the spotlight.

Buying your pieces as a set is often more affordable than purchasing items individually. If you’ve competed before, consider reusing jewelry from a previous show. With a good cleaning or a small update—like swapping one piece or pairing it with a new suit—you can refresh your look without starting from scratch. Choosing classic, versatile styles can also help stretch your investment across multiple shows or divisions. If you’re on a tight budget, keep an eye out for sales or consider purchasing gently used pieces from other competitors.

At Center Stage Competition Jewels, we offer affordable, high-quality options designed to enhance your physique and elevate your stage presence. Whether you're building a brand-new look or updating an existing one, you can sparkle with intention—without overspending.

Tan $100+

Your tan plays a major role in your overall stage presence—helping define muscle tone and giving your physique the depth it needs under bright stage lights. A bad tan can distract from your hard work, so it’s worth doing right. Most competitions partner with a preferred tanning vendor at the host hotel or venue. While these services typically start around $100, they’re often the safest choice, as they know exactly what the judges are looking for and usually include touch-ups in the price.

If you’re looking to save, ask whether the event offers discounted rates for early booking or multi-service bundles that include tanning, hair, and makeup. You can also check if any local competitors are certified in competition tanning and offer mobile or small-group services at a lower price point.

DIY tanning is another option, but it requires experience and careful planning. If you go this route, make sure you use a product specifically made for stage competition and run at least one full trial before show day to avoid streaks or uneven color. While professional tanning is highly recommended for most athletes, with the right prep and product, a well-executed self-tan can be a budget-friendly alternative.

Waxing $30+ -

Keep it neat & clean.  We'll just leave that there! ;-)

Don't have to have but, nice to have $100+ -

While not absolutely essential, there are several “nice-to-have” items that can make your show day smoother and less stressful—things like Bikini Bite (for suit security), a satin robe for backstage, a protective cup case for your jewelry, slippers, resistance bands, or even a compact mirror. These extras can easily add up to $100 or more if you’re not planning ahead.

To avoid last-minute stress and overspending, start setting aside a small budget early in your prep for these miscellaneous items. Look for deals online, shop sales, or buy gently used items from other competitors. You might even be able to borrow certain things—like a robe or resistance bands—from a friend who’s competed before.

Show Tix - $20+

If you’re planning to have friends or family in the audience, don’t forget to factor in the cost of show tickets. Prices typically start around $20 but can go up to $50 or more depending on the event, seating options, and whether your supporters attend both prejudging and finals. Many shows offer discounted pre-sale tickets, so it’s a good idea to have your guests purchase early to save money and secure good seats.

Photos $150+

Peak week leads to peak memories—so don’t miss the chance to capture your hard work on stage. Most competitions have official photographers and videographers available for booking, offering professional-quality shots that you’ll treasure for years. Packages typically start around $150 and up, depending on what’s included.

If you're interested, book early! These slots fill up fast, and you don’t want to miss out. On a tighter budget? Ask your guests to sit close and take their own photos or videos during your time on stage. While the quality may vary, it’s still a meaningful way to document the moment.

You can also check the show promoter or federation’s website after the event—some stage shots are uploaded online at no cost. While they may not be as polished as professional packages, they’re a great way to relive the experience and share your success with friends and family.

This isn’t meant to discourage you—it’s meant to prepare you. Competing is an incredible experience, but it’s important to enter the journey fully ready—physically, mentally, and financially. Take your time, plan wisely, and make sure every detail is aligned so you can feel confident and proud when you step on stage.

With thoughtful preparation, you can manage costs and truly enjoy the process. It’s an investment, but one that pays off in personal growth, confidence, and accomplishment. Most importantly, do it for you—because your best is the best. Keep reminding yourself of that every step of the way.
